Waffles anyone?

So, I am spoiled rotten. My boys make me breakfast almost EVERY weekend. Jealous? Eh? I think I am very loved. Or maybe it's just the waffles they love. I know I love those waffles. How did this come about? Well, I'll tell you. Last Christmas, John received a waffle maker, courtesy of my parents. Why? Because every time we went shopping with them, which happened more often than you would think, if we passed a waffle maker (one of those ones that flips over), he had a story about using that same kind of waffle iron the continental breakfast in some hotel he stayed at in California - 6 years ago!! So they decided he needed a waffle iron.

That same Christmas, I received a copy of the most recent Fanny Farmer Cookbook. This was most fortuitous, as inside the cookbook lay the most wonderful waffle recipe in existence. Seriously. These are good waffles. In fact, I am drooling right now just thinking about them. Yum. And they are pretty easy to make. We have these waffles about once a week, sometimes every other week, but pretty frequently. So, both presents have been loved. A lot. By our entire family.

Because it's John's waffle iron, he makes them. But not alone!! Nope. As with everything else we do, he has a small helper. William loves to help. He "helps" me vacuum, sweep, mop, etc. But his favorite is to help cook, so naturally, we wants to help make waffles. This has become a tradition for us on the weekends. So much so, that when John starts making breakfast, if he doesn't ask William if he wants to help, he becomes VERY sad, and has a minor meltdown. Luckily, John normally remembers to ask him for help and together, in their pj's, they make the waffle batter. This is an adorable sight :) I think they are SOOOO cute together, that I had to share this video. He is such a good dad :) Not to mention a wonderful husband...watching him constantly reminds me how much I love him, and why I fell in love with him. Enjoy :)

By the way, when we don't have waffles, we have pancakes. Wonderful pancakes made from a recipe from a restaurant rip off cookbook - thanks Jeff and Rebecca! John (and William) usually makes these too. I don't understand how this happened. I guess I just lucked out. Like I said... I am spoiled rotten. But at least I know it, and appreciate it :)

Our dramatic return to Utah....

So, I've probably told all of you about this incident, but I have some great pictures that I have neglected to post, despite my promises. So, at the risk of repeating myself (because we all know I NEVER do that), I will tell the story again.

So...In early September, my little family trekked back to Denver to visit relatives and friends for a week long visit that went by WAY too fast. John had to be back to work on Monday, so he flew home Sunday night, allowing him to spend Sunday with his parents, rather than driving home. William and I drove home Tuesday. It was a great drive. We got along great and saw some sights on our short stops to stretch our legs. Even with all the stops - the bladders of a 3 year old and a 6 month pregnant woman do not last long - we made pretty good time and were home by 6pm.

Everybody was SOOO happy to be home. The dog, William, me. We were disappointed Daddy wasn't home, be we knew he wouldn't be. He had a softball game that night and wouldn't be home until later. William helped me unload the important stuff from the car - toiletries, snacks, roasted green chiles (he he he) - then he went outside to play and I went to the bathroom. I was in there about 2 minutes when he came back in and was playing with Dipper in my bedroom. Normally, this is not a problem, as he doesn't usually get into stuff, so I thought nothing of it. Obviously, the key words are NORMALLY and USUALLY. This time, it was a problem. After about 10 min, I hear him closing bedroom doors, yelling at Dipper to come back, and giggling. Now is when I begin to worry. So I hurry up and try to finish when I get a whiff of something fragrant. It smells like cologne or body wash. I yell at him through the door asking what the smell is. He yells back through the bathroom door, " Don't worry Mom!! We are fine, I'm just cleaning!!"

Now, I'm REALLY worried. I come out of the bathroom, and this is the first thing I see.
Shaving Cream!! All over the poor dog. But, the boy is nowhere to be seen. I look in the baby's room to see if he is in there... nope, but there is shaving cream ALL OVER the floor, the chair, the dresser, the bed, the wall...Sigh.

I call William, and hear him calling me, "Over here Mom!!" He is in the living room "washing" the railing, which pretty much consisted of him squirting shaving cream on his hand and wiping it on the rail like he is scrubbing. There is shaving cream in his hair, on his shirt, hands, and face. I had the hardest time being stern and not laughing. I asked him what he was doing, and he said, "I decided I needed to shave like Daddy. Then I wanted to help clean the house!" Well, I was flabbergasted. I just laughed and told him not to play with things that don't belong to him. I got an, "Okay, sorry mom." and then I put him to work helping me clean. I threw the dog outside and set to work cleaning up. He is a pretty good helper for a 3 year old, so we got it cleaned up pretty fast. Except for the carpet in the baby's room. That had to wait a while. We took a few days before we got around to shampooing. William cleaned up his own face, and then, we needed to tackle the dog. Literally. She HATES water. When the sprinklers go off outside, she panics and won't go outside. So, I literally had to sit on the dog while I turned on the water and hosed her down. I probably ended messier than William or the dog when all was said and done.

John said he was impressed at my reaction, because he would have blown a gasket, but he thought I was a pushover because I didn't discipline William. I beg to differ. Did he get a time-out? Or lose priviledges? No. But he did have consequences: he had to help me clean the mess, and he had to take a bath in the middle of the day (where he did NOT get to play). So, I say, I just saw the humor in the situation. Nothing was ruined, except the shaving cream, so what was the point of getting angry? Besides, judging from his expression in the above picture, it was pretty clear to him I was amused.
